Three ways to buy a replacement gearbox in South Africa — the right one depends on your budget, the type of box and how long you plan to keep the car.
A low-kilometre OEM unit pulled from a donor vehicle — the cheapest option, usually with a 30–90 day warranty. Best for older cars and simpler manual or torque-converter boxes.
A reconditioned automatic gearbox is stripped, worn parts replaced and rebuilt to spec, then sold with a longer 6–12 month warranty. The safer choice on high-failure DSG, PowerShift and CVT units.
With a gearbox exchange you fit a ready reconditioned box and hand back your old one as a trade-in "core", which brings the price down. Ask each supplier whether a core deposit or return is required.

A replacement gearbox is one of the bigger spends a car owner faces, and the right choice depends on the exact code, ratio and bellhousing for your model and year — not just the make. The most common confusion is between the different automatic types: a dual-clutch box (DSG, S-tronic, DCT, PowerShift, EDC) is not the same as a CVT (Multitronic, X-Tronic, IVT) or a conventional torque-converter automatic, and they share almost no parts. Not sure which you have? Our guide to DSG vs CVT vs torque-converter gearboxes explains the difference. And if you're still weighing up a repair, our rundown of common gearbox problems and what they cost to fix covers the warning signs worth catching early.
